Mackerel is an extremely nutritious and flavoursome fish, packed full of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B. A member of the Scombridae family, along with another favourite of ours, Tuna, they’re extremely versatile and can be enjoyed smoked, baked, pan fried or grilled. They’re a tasty addition to salads and stir-fries, and pair well with a vast number of different flavours such as lemon, tomato, black pepper, chilli and fennel.
Mackerel tend to travel in large shoals that can stretch as far as 20 miles in length, feeding on other small fish, plankton, crustaceans, mollusks and fish eggs. They’re slim, streamlined fish that generally average between 12 – 18 inches in length. Able to survive in both tropical and temperate seas, they can be found in a number of different seas including the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They tend to migrate to the UK in the Spring where they can be found close to the shore, and then move along to warmer, deeper seas in the Autumn. Characterised by their deeply forked tails and long, slender bodies, they’ve got relatively long lifespans, able to survive up to 25 years in the wild.
