Mullet Grey

Chelon Labrosus

Growing no larger than around 13 inches, Mullet Grey is a predominantly European species that prefers to live in calm, still waters around harbours, marinas, estuaries, and natural coves and bays. As a demersal fish, they feed on organic matter scattered along the seabed. Interestingly, there are three species of Grey Mullet, appropriately named: Thick Lipped, Thin Lipped and Golden Grey Mullet due to their physical characteristics. However, with their silvery, pearlescent, jacket of scales, they’re often confused with the highly popular, Seabass.

Once filleted, Mullet Grey offers a distinct, but deliciously earthy flavour, and is one of the key ingredients in the traditional Greek dip, Taramasalata. Adding robust, acidic sauces, dressings and marinades made with lemon or white wine vinegar, can certainly complement its strong taste.
